In today’s Culture Session, we took a look at some inspirational moments in the Rio Olympics. There’s always something new to learn in everything. Let’s take a look at 5 characteristics of some of the greatest athletes of this year’s Olympics:

1. Never give up on your dreams. (Joseph Schooling met his hero, Michael Phelps, and annialiated his record. He is the gold medalist in the 100 m butterfly at the 2016 Olympics, attaining Singapore’s first-ever Olympic gold. His winning time of 50.39 seconds is an Olympic, Asian, and national record.)
2. When you fall in life, how you get up matters the most. (Mohamed “Mo” Farah – In the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, he won the 10,000 m gold medal. Even though he fell during the race, which could’ve caused him to completely lose focus, he got up and went on to win the gold medal.)
3. It’s always good to try new things. (Almaz Ayana – She set a new 10,000 metres world record, breaking the previous one set in 1993, when winning gold in the event at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.)
4. You should never allow your past to dictate your future. (Luvo Manyonga – South African track and field athlete who specialises in the long jump. He holds a personal best of 8.37 m (27 ft 512 in), set in 2016.)
5. Know what you stand for. (Wayde van Niekerk – In the 2016 Olympic Games Men’s 400m, he won the gold medal with a World Record time of 43.03 seconds (reaction time 0.181 s), beating the time of 43.18 seconds set by Michael Johnson during the 1999 World Championships in Athletics in Seville, Spain)

Lesson to be learnt: “If you don’t stand for anything, life will just be a miserable journey.”
