My name is Allistair Africa and I’m a young individual from Bonteheuwel. I have been thinking about what I wanted to do with my life but I could never pursue the opportunities that I received when growing up because my family wasn’t able to support me. I always strived to be the best in whatever I did.
I developed a passion for technology, from the use of it to the development of it. I applied to varsity and didn’t get in due to a 4% lack of marks for a specific subject and not knowing what I’ll be doing next. I was stressed and concerned about my future.
A friend of mine then told me about GLA and what I would be learning. I was only in it because of the coding aspect. I figured this was an opportunity I couldn’t let go of. I then joined the Yes program and that was the start of a life-changing experience. It challenged the way I think, the way I speak, the way I deal with issues, I was challenged in every aspect that matters in my life. I grew to be mature and responsible. I became a leader, a friend, but most importantly I found a new family. I got to share my passion and also developed new ones.
My journey was amazing with all the people that came into my life that taught me valuable lessons. Through my journey, I have learned skills that equipped me to become valuable wherever I go. I’ve learned computer languages, leadership skills, design thinking, photography, digital skills, communication skills, UX, UI and I’ve learned to design. I am still growing in everything that I’m learning. I was also introduced to the YES Apps where I got to learn more skills to equip myself to better my future.
One of the things that kept me going was that everything is possible if you don’t give up. What I have overcome through my journey of growth is not to be kept all to myself but to share with the world so that we all become better. Nothing can hold you back from the things you want to achieve except you.
