RLabs Nigeria Kicks Off Their Holiday Programme

In a world increasingly driven by technology, equipping children with relevant digital and tech skills is essential to thrive in this digital age. In August 2024, RLabs Nigeria organised a holiday programme for junior secondary school students to learn basic coding and soft skills. The programme was designed to be educative, interactive, and fun where they could learn valuable skills while having a blast.

The programme kicked off on Tuesday, the 6th of August, 2024, with seven kids in attendance. It was held on all Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays in August, over a four week period.

The highlight was introducing Scratch, a visual programming language designed for young people. Through a series of workshops, they were taught how to set up Scratch, create games, animations, and stories; basic web development using basic HTML, basic CSS & Visual Studio Code, and how to host a website.

Beyond coding, the children were trained in soft skills like problem-solving, communication, critical thinking, teamwork, and leadership through group activities and brainstorming sessions. These sessions equipped them with the skills necessary to succeed in all aspects of life.

To make the learning experience even more enjoyable, fun games and activities were incorporated for unwinding. We had a virtual tour of Carnegie Hall, puzzle games, board games, and movies.

On the last day of the programme, each child had completed an individual project. Some had set up a website, others developed maze and puzzle games. Two certificates were issued to all the learners; one for the Scratch/web development course, and the other for the soft skills training.

The summer holiday programme was a resounding success, a memorable and enriching experience. It ended on the 28th of August, 2024. It created a stimulating environment in which the children could learn, and discover their potential. We are exceedingly grateful to have been able to facilitate and experience this process with them.
