This past week a report was released that the numeracy and literacy levels at South African schools were disappointing and immediate attention is required to address this problem. RLabs with its new project “moFunda” in partnership with Ympyra ,JamiiX and MXit have piloted a basic numeracy programme via MXit (Mobile Instant Messager) and mobile browser providing learners the opportunity to improve their numeracy levels using their mobile phone.

In its first week of this pilot 2,716 users registered for the programme with 45,208 visits by these users during the first week of its launch.

This is a clear indication that there is an opportunity to leverage mobile phone penetration in South Africa especially amongst young people as an educational tool to be part of the solution to address the basic education crisis experienced in South Africa.

After the overwhelming success of this pilot RLabs with its partners plans to release a literacy programme with the hope that it will be able to provide much needed support to young learners in South Africa.
