Last week Friday, the 1st June 2012, one of our Geeky Moms were asked by Google to speak at the Online Child Safety Campaign Launch, whereby she had to give her testimonial of her experience as a senior citizen in the online world and what she thinks about issues of safety. The campaign was held in Johannesburg- The Rosebank at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. This making it a jet setting experience for Lilian George, our Geeky Mom, accompanied by Rabia Adamson, one of the lead facilitators at the RLabs Academy.
The key message for Google was that the internet is a useful media, especially for kids to find education, entertainment and info – they do not want parents stopping their children from using the net, but finding ways of making sure that they use it in ways that do not expose them to harm. “Children will always face risks, it’s for us to navigate them”, says Fortune Sibanda – Google SA Policy Manager.
Lilian George’s message, in particular, was addressed to other parents out there who are intimidated by modern technologies and the internet, thereby leaving their kids to do as they wish, and exposing them to harm. But sharing her story that afternoon in front of NGO’s and the media inspired many other seniors who were afraid of using the internet. And they now too want the training Lilian George has been getting through the RLabs Academy.
Really proud of Lilian Patricia George.
Congratulations Mrs George you are a true inspiration.
