World Cleanup Day is an annual global social action program aimed at combating the global solid waste problem, including the problem of marine debris. It is coordinated by the Estonian organization.

We all got together and contributed to the community of Bridgetown by cleaning. We started at the Nantes Park and along the river, once we were done you could immediately notice the clean surroundings. It just shows how we as people don’t take care of our environment and just dump anything anywhere. It was also a great feeling to do something good for your community but also yourself.

I had a great experience, it was overwhelming seeing everyone contribute to the community and also seeing people thank you as your cleaning is wonderful. We can only blame ourselves for the mess we cause to our environment.

My memorable moments were us as a team coming together and seeing everyone’s commitment to picking up waste to recycling. Some prizes were up for grabs and I was one of the lucky ones to win a Regenize t-shirt made up of plastic bottles. It’s amazing how all those plastic goods can benefit you and how creative you can be with them.

The three R’s – reduce, reuse and recycle – all help to cut down on the amount of waste we throw away. They conserve natural resources, landfill space and energy. Setting a new landfill has become difficult and more expensive due to environmental regulations and public opposition.

KEEP THE ENVIRONMENT CLEAN FOR THE NEXT GENERATION, BECAUSE THEY OUR FUTURE.Zinedene Jaftha
