Westridge Tourism Preceint: A Cultural and Culinary Journey
On Saturday, October 19, 2024, our Knowledge Exchange and Westridge Tourism Precinct teams welcomed a group of enthusiastic visitors accompanied by Aunty Nita’s Tours who were eager to experience our community’s diverse, colourful culture and creativity.
The day began with a tour of our facility, where visitors navigated through various programs and projects that RLabs has implemented over the years. The atmosphere buzzed with excitement as guests discovered how we strive to empower our community through innovation and collaboration.
Following the facility tour, the visitors participated in a mini street art experience and gallery. Our team introduced them to the stunning murals that adorn our neighbours, each carrying a unique story. We took the time to explain the backgrounds of the artists and the significance of their work, illuminating the cultural narratives and social messages that the murals represent. This offered guests a deeper understanding of the local artistic landscape and the exhibition displayed at RLabs House.
The tour also included a visit to the new agri-tech park next to the RLabs space in Westridge. Here, we shared the story of the park’s creation—from the vision that sparked the project to the dedicated individuals who contributed their time and effort to bring it to life. Our visitors learned about the importance of this green space for the community and the ongoing initiatives aimed at promoting sustainability and environmental awareness.
The adventure continued with a tour of Rocklands, a vibrant area in Mitchell’s Plain. Guests explored the neighbourhood, gaining insights into its history and the everyday lives of its residents.
One of the highlights of the day was the full gatsby experience. Guests had the chance to make their own Gatsby, a beloved local family-size sandwich filled with a variety of delicious ingredients at the Hood Kitchen in Rocklands, Mitchell’s Plain. The space was filled with laughter and the aroma of freshly prepared food, creating a delightful atmosphere “In the Hood”. This hands-on culinary experience not only satisfied their appetites but also gave visitors a taste of the community’s culinary traditions.
Overall, the day was a resounding success, leaving our visitors with unforgettable memories and a deeper appreciation for the culture and creativity thriving in Mitchells Plain. We are grateful for the opportunity to share our passion and the stories that define our community.
As Westridge Tourism Precinct, we believe in hosting outstanding experiences from around the world, and the power of connection through art, food, and community engagement. We look forward to welcoming more visitors in the future to experience the richness of our local culture firsthand.
